No one expects the Punksburgh Inquisition: Jesse Ley (Delicious Pastries / City Steps / Mantiques)

Between being a member of a triad of bands and co-DJing the killer dance phenomenon known as “Strangeways,” chances are you’ve encountered today’s inquisition feature:  Jesse Ley.  Talented and charming, Jesse will rock a set on the drumkit and then have friendly chats with admiring audience members.  Staying busy with his myriad of projects, he’s pulling double duty this Friday at the Delicious Pastries‘ double a-sided single release show, where he’ll play percussion with the Pastries and then DJ for the “Strangeways” afterparty.  We at Punksburgh caught up with him to inquire about the following:

Lookahead to Ladyfest! This Weekend: 6/23/17 – 6/25/17

ladyfest 3

Happy Solstice! Festival season is upon us and this weekend brings us the females in the forefront Ladyfest! Founded in Olympia, Washington in 2000, this year’s festivities mark it’s fifth year in Pittsburgh. Boasting a 40 (!) band line-up, the three-day event is organized by participating bands The Lopez and Brazilian Wax, with a moderately-sized army of volunteers from all walks of life in tow. As if rocking out with your favorite female ensembles isn’t enough, the whole festival serves to benefit The Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh!

With SO many great artists appearing this year, I figured I’d take the opportunity to mention some of the acts that I’m hoping to catch!

Show Review: PUP / Charly Bliss @ Spirit (6/13/17)

I like going to all kinds of shows. Six bands, starts at 6pm at Roboto? Sure. Four bands, starts at 10pm at Gooski’s? Iʻll be there. All day music festivals? Count me in. Iʻm typically down for whatever. But now, at my advanced age (said only slightly tongue-in-cheek), I hold a special place in my heart for the two band early start show. On a Tuesday night after a rough weekend, this was exactly what I was looking forward to: two killer bands, minimal downtime, and a chance to be home by a reasonable hour.

I was clearly not the only one who thought this way, as an eager group of fans was waiting outside Spirit for the doors to open at 7:00 pm, and shortly afterwards the area directly in front of the stage immediately filled up. All-ages shows shows are pretty hard to come by, but a quick glance at the crowd showed that many youngins were taking advantage of this opportunity. Antiquated Pennsylvania liquor laws meant that drinkers were sequestered to a roped-off area in the back, but itʻs good to see the younger generation coming out in full force.
