About

The Optimists are a “roots pop” band consisting of four veterans of Pittsburgh’s rock scene. Their 2nd CD, Team Doubtful, was released in October 2016. Their previous CD, The Optimists, was released in January 2014.

The band formed in 2011 when guitarist/singer-songwriters John Young and Steve Morrison revived their longtime collaboration and recruited bassist Rick Gercak and drummer Dave Klug. Morrison’s and Klug’s previous project, The Aviation Blondes, had recently disbanded, as had Young’s and Gercak’s prior band, Paperback. From the ashes of those two bands rose The Optimists.

In the spring of 2017 the band welcomed new drummer extraordinaire Tyler Kweder (White Wives, American Armada, Anti-Flag).

The band members’ previous affiliations date back to the 1980s and ’90s, including storied Pittsburgh bands such as Hector in Paris, The 11th Hour, The SPUDS, The Affordable Floors, The Pundits, and many others.
