True to their DIY nature, upon entering the concert side of Howlers, I paid my door charge directly to Action Camp’s guitarist Bengt Alexsander. The doom-centered duo (now trio) has upheld the DIY ethic since its formation – over ten years ago now – and this show was no different. During their setup, the audience was treated to a short and sweet impromptu cover of Brian Wilson’s “God Only Knows,” and then kicked their set off in high gear with their intense, driving track titled “Warpaint” from the Better Made Fast EP.
The show then changed pace with a few tracks off of the 2014 album PA, in which tales about Pennsylvania’s man-made disasters are regaled through the classically-trained voice of the band’s singer/bassist, Maura Jacob.
Following that came a true surprise – an announcement of the band’s upcoming EP release show, as well as performances of a few tracks from the unreleased EP. This raw, unedited unveiling of new tracks has me truly excited to attend the release show at Club Cafe, and should be one for the books. Even after seeing the band live three times, they never fail to impress.
[True to the nature of shows at Howlers, the music was too loud for my poor phone mic to accurately record. The clips I managed to get don’t do the band justice. Headphone users beware.]
