No One Expects the Punksburgh Inquisition: Anthony Sarnelli (Cynimatics)

Today’s Inquistion features Anthony Sarnelli, vocalist and guitarist for Cynimatics.

What was the artist, album, or song that inspired you to play/write music?
I have an artist, album, and song actually. I remember I specifically picked up a guitar to learn the song “All My Best Friends Are Metalheads” by Less Than Jake. I heard the song on Tony Hawk 3 and instantly knew this would be my favorite genre of music. Because I didn’t have internet, I bought the album that the song was on (Hello Rockview) from Sam Goodie in Westmoreland mall in 2005 just to hear the song. It was the only cd /music I had access to for pretty much 2 years straight. I was in 7th grade when I picked up a guitar and the entire year I took lessons and learned how to play just to be able to cover that song in a band. Which in the 8th grade talent show I did, much to mine and the entire school’s embarrassment.

List the names of every band that you’ve ever played in ever.

What is your favorite piece of merch that you own?

My favorite piece of merch I own is probably my Punchline Rewind EP poster. (Check out our interview here)

Tell us one thing about the Pittsburgh music scene that could be better and one thing about the scene that you love.

Pittsburgh has a bustling music scene for young people, I love it.

One thing that could be better I think, is that it seems promoters are always trying to find ways to make the audience stay for all the bands when really more bands should have attitudes to bring people to watch them instead of expecting people they don’t know to watch them while putting in no work.

What’s something about you/your band that you think people should know that maybe they don’t?

We actually purposefully combine 3rd wave ska music and pop punk music to see if we can get pop punk kids who don’t like ska to like ska and ska fans who don’t like pop punk to like pop punk.

If you had to pick only one of your songs for people to listen to which one would it be?

The Riddle House

Who would you cast in a movie of your band?

Definitely Brad Pitt in 1999 would have to play Shawn.

How does your mom/family react to your music? Do they come to your shows?

My mom supports us, and my dad loves ska and actually yells at me when I play pop punk and emo because it’s “not ska” when really I was the one who showed ska to my dad in the first place. They sometimes come to our shows.

What band or artist have you seen live the most number of times?

Less Than Jake

What’s the craziest thing that has happed to you at a show as a performer or spectator?

The craziest thing that ever happened to me as a performer was probably when I was in 11th grade and playing in The Trabajabas. We signed up for a pay-to-play battle of the bands in March 2011 (11th grade) where 24 bands played. We sold 75 tickets for it and handed the promoter $900 cash. We played to a crowd of what looked like an entirely full Mr Smalls Theater, and surprisingly got a really good reaction (I think). I’m gonna guess most of the audience was the other Metalcore bands that were playing and their girlfriends. My Dad, who was slightly intoxicated we’ll say, somehow made his way onto the stage and announced us as “The Best Band of The Evening” without any of us knowing he was going to do that. Also we were all shirtless and had no fashion sense so if you look at videos of it on youtube there’s just a bunch of shirtless dudes in baggy jeans jumping around wearing fedoras. Pretty ridiculous. And on top of all this, we WON. And the prize was LESS money than we gave the promoter in ticket sales. RIP highschool.

You can see Anthony and the rest of Cynimatics playing tonight, July 29, 2017 at Club Cafe with Two Birds (check out our interview here), The Nightbeast, and DJ Emo Face. Cynimatics has a big announcement coming up on August 1 as well. No other shows are currently listed, but you can get your healthy dose of pop punk and 3rd wave ska by checking them out on bandcamp or following them on twitter and instagram.
