“We practice every Monday”: an Interview with The Mondaze

I recently got to sit down with The Mondaze a three-piece pop rock group from Pittsburgh. The band is made up of Jason (vocals/guitar), Brad (drums), and Wassell (bass/vocals).

Brad, Jason, and Wassell. Fun fact, I took these pictures.

What are you currently working on?

W: Our new EP

B: Three new songs, I guess for the EP.

J: Pretty much the EP and booking more shows.

How long have you guys been a band?

J: The Mondaze have been around since 2012

B: Yeah but we took a break, we’ve only been playing actively as a three-piece for a year

W: The basement has been arranged around me. Everyone else has moved down here, but I’ve been in this spot since I joined.

J: I found Brad on the internet and then we found Wassell at a Subway. I told him I’d give him a copy of Kill Bill Vol. I if he came and jammed with us, and then he joined.

What shows do you have coming up?

B: Saturday at Smiling Moose

J: We have some other ideas, too, but that’s the only one that’s booked

W: There are other shows in the works to be announced once we solidify the lineup.

If people can’t make the show, how else can they access your music?

Our music is up for free on our website themondazerock.com, it can be streamed on Spotify, or you can purchase it on iTunes

Who would you say your biggest musical influences are?

Blink 182, New Found Glory, Jimmy Eat World Midtown, Foo Fighters, Saves the Day, Punchline, and The Get Up Kids

What does your musical process consist of?

J: We play every Monday. I write music and then we decide which of the songs I’ve written to work on on Mondays.

B: I sometimes am here on Tuesdays, too.

J: I write music almost every night so that’s part of the process.

What is some advice you wish you had when you were starting out?

W: I mean, I got told that my hands are enormous so I should play bass…so I play bass.

B: Play out of fun, which is what I’m still doing.

J: Play Pittsburgh sooner. I grew up out in the country. Go to as many shows as you can. The more bands you see, the more ideas you get for what can be done or what you want to do.

Everyone has a favorite venue, what would you say yours is?

B: Laga

J: Yeah, Laga was a favorite. It should be opened back up. Otherwise current top three would be Club Cafe, The Smiling Moose, and while we haven’t played there recently, Mr. Smalls

Every venue always seems to have stairs. You can’t escape them.

You’re a part of the local scene, what are some of your favorite local bands?

J: Life Is Short

B: Man, I was going to say Life Is Short.

J: Two Birds, Eternal Boy, Young Lungs and Paper States. I’m really excited to play with those last two on Saturday.

W: Maytide

B: Fire at the Point

J: Kid Durango

What was your favorite show you’ve played?

J: Probably our CD release show at Hard Rock

What is something you love about the scene and what, if anything, would you change?

J: I love the people. It’s almost like a big family. Good bands make it awesome.

Something I would change would be to have more venues. I also wish I was playing more, but that’s in me.

There is a healthy group with lots of people involved which is great because with more people being involved the better it gets. The scene just gets more lively.

What would an ideal tour lineup to attend or play look like?

J: Blink 182, New Found Glory, and Jimmy Eat World

Do you have any favorite local businesses you think people should be aware of?

B: Franks, I swear they don’t sponsor us, but it’d be cool if they did.

J: Churn

W: Brian’s Brew’ry Outlet, they have a good selection.

What would you say your favorite pizza place is?

Simultaneously: Franks.

W: Even when it’s bad it’s still good.

J: Usually it’s really good.

B: I feel like I need to specifically say their Buffalo chicken pizza with ranch

J: I’m not like a bad person or anything, but if I did something awful and ended up with the death penalty, that’d be my last requested meal.

B&W: Definitely.
